The panel was moderated by ANIU President Julio Fern\u00e1ndez, Engineer.     <\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 800px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-12224-1\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cobertura-telemundo-12.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cobertura-telemundo-12.mp4\">https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cobertura-telemundo-12.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nThe papers presented were<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/ensenanza-de-la-matematica-en-uruguay-algunas-reflexiones.pdf\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mathematics Education in Uruguay: Some Reflections<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, prepared in 2024 by the Interacademic Group for Mathematics Education, and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/educacion-en-matematica-analisis-y-propuestas.pdf\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mathematics Education: Analysis and Proposals<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, published in 2026 by ANIU.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second study expands on the inter-academic report by reviewing national and international research and offers recommendations for public policymakers, educational institutions, teachers, and families.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A historic deficit<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports warn that difficulties in learning mathematics contribute to grade repetition, academic lag, and dropout rates, in addition to limiting the development of human resources in fields related to science, technology, and innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the central problems is the shortage of teachers with degrees in secondary education. According to the statistical yearbooks of the Ministry of Education and Culture cited in the report, mathematics accounts for 14% of those entering teacher training programs, but only 6% of all graduates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.elobservador.com.uy\/ciencia-y-tecnologia\/uruguay-tiene-un-deficit-historico-docentes-matematica-que-propone-la-academia-ingenieria-n6053742\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12212\" src=\"https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/el-observador-cobertura.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/el-observador-cobertura.jpg 768w, https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/el-observador-cobertura-390x220.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other studies show that, among those who enrolled in the mathematics teacher-training program at the Artigas Teachers\u2019 Institute and the Litoral Regional Teachers\u2019 Center between 2005 and 2014, only 3% completed the program within the expected timeframe. For the Northern Regional Teachers\u2019 Training Center, a dropout rate of 70% was reported. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The document also notes that teachers with higher qualifications and more years of experience tend to be concentrated in less vulnerable schools, a distribution that can exacerbate learning inequalities among students from different socioeconomic backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Areas of Action<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposals include strengthening teachers&#8217; training in mathematics and pedagogy, incorporating remedial courses at the beginning of teacher training, and providing support to help reduce academic lag and dropout rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also recommended to replace teaching focused on the repetition of procedures with practices that prioritize reasoning, problem-solving, argumentation, and modeling. The use of technology must be accompanied by teacher training and clear pedagogical objectives so that it can effectively contribute to learning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12225\" src=\"https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/presentacion-de-propuestas-sobre-matematicas.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/presentacion-de-propuestas-sobre-matematicas.jpg 768w, https:\/\/respaldo.aniu.org.uy\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/presentacion-de-propuestas-sobre-matematicas-390x220.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of public policy, the report proposes creating scholarships and incentives to attract young people to the teaching profession, improving working conditions, and establishing flexible pathways for college graduates with a background in mathematics to enter the teaching profession.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also proposes mentoring programs for beginning teachers, continuing education opportunities, and greater coordination among ANEP, the Ministry of Education and Culture, universities, the National Institute for Educational Assessment, and Ceibal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the meeting, Pereira emphasized the need to strengthen teacher training and noted that ANEP plans to present a national plan for mathematics education in the coming months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This initiative is part of a joint effort by the national academies aimed at strengthening education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and contributing to the development of sustainable education policies.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, August 11, at ORT Uruguay University, the national academies of Engineering, Science, Medicine, and Economics presented two papers that analyze the challenges facing mathematics education in the country and propose solutions to address them.
